By this time each year, I’ve usually hit the after-Christmas sales to stock on wrapping paper and ribbon for the next holiday season. Not this year. This year to honor my commitment to minimizing my carbon footprint, I’m going to find greener ways to wrap it up. Some ideas are to:
- Reuse ribbons, gifts bags, and wrapping paper from presents received that’s still in good shape. An iron on the low setting will remove most wrinkles.
- Cut up holiday cards to use as gift tags.
- Save the Sunday comics to use as wrapping paper.
- Buy inexpensive, reusable grocery tote bags to use as gift bags. I’ve noticed that Trader Joe’s has a fun selection.
- Look for baskets that people are throwing away that could become gift baskets. People often set them beside or on top of their trash bins on garbage collection day, so there’s really no “dumpster diving” required.
- Scout yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores, and bargain bins for cheap bandanas, scarves, cloth napkins, or fabric remnants that can be wrapped and tied around gifts.
What are other economical and environmentally friendly ways to wrap it up?
